What is Elder Friendly?

Action for Older Persons is proud to bring the Elder Friendly Business Certification Program to the Southern Tier. This program uses secret shoppers, age 60 or older, who evaluate businesses on rigorous standards of accessibility, customer service and layout. The Elder Friendly Business Certification Program is a nationally recognized program that has been replicated in 13 regions in 9 states before reaching the Southern Tier.

Once a business is certified Elder Friendly, they will receive a seal of approval:

When you see this seal of approval you know that business has invested time and energy into becoming Elder Friendly. You will find restaurants, retail outlets, and even service providers who are joining the Elder Friendly movement.

How Can YOU Help?

Become an Elder Friendly Volunteer! Contact Action for Older Persons at 722-1251 or via our online contact form HERE. As a trained Elder Friendly evaluator, you will be sent "undercover" to evaluate a business. Once you complete your evaluation, your score will be combined with others to determine if the business meets Elder Friendly standards.

Patronize Elder Friendly businesses. Click here for the current business directory. Look for the Elder Friendly decal on businesses and websites. Let them know you appreciate that they are Elder Friendly certified.

Recruit new businesses to get involved with the program. Talk with business managers and encourage them to join the growing ranks of the nationally recognized Elder Friendly Certification Program.

Elder Friendly Business Directory

In addition to an Elder Friendly decal in the front window - you can also find a listing of Elder Friendly Businesses in an easy-to-read format: The Elder Friendly Business Directory. You will find these directories at businesses throughout the community, and at Action for Older Persons 30 W. State St. in Binghamton.

Elder Friendly Fan Club

We are delighted to announce an exciting addition tothe Elder Friendly Business Certification Program, the “Elder Friendly Fan Club” (EF Fan Club).

This program works like a frequent shopper program. Action for Older Persons and EF Fan Club businesses have wallet size cards available to seniors. There are 12 spots that seniors will need to get “punched” when they buy something or use a service at an Elder Friendly Business that’s a Fan Club member. Once all 12 spots have been punched, seniors can redeem their EF Fan Club card at Action for Older Persons for “Elder Friendly Bucks”. They will receive “$5.00 bucks” for every completely punched card. These Elder Friendly Bucks can then be used at participating Elder Friendly businesses. Businesses will have the discretion of what these Bucks can be used for.

The wallet card created for seniors will list all of the businesses participating in the EF Fan Club. With new businesses signing on every day, this list is subject to change.

All participating businesses will have a supply of EF Fan Club cards at their location for distribution to their patrons.

So stop by AOP or any Elder Friendly Fan Club Business to pick up your card today.
