Action for Older Persons has received some help in spreading the message that seniors at risk should get tested for diabetes.
A national coalition called the Medicare Diabetes Screening Project has given the agency $2,500 to raise awareness. AOP Executive Director Shelli Cordisco says Medicare recipients who have one of 5 risk factors are eligible for free diabetes screening. The risks are being overweight, having a family history of diabetes, having high blood pressure or cholesterol or having had diabetes during pregnancy. Cordisco says advanced age itself is the large risk factor and many seniors don't know they have it. "35 million seniors in the nation, about 17.5 million have diabetes undiagnosed. So, almost half of our senior population is walking around not realizing that they have diabetes."
The agency will use the money on printed materials it will include in packets given to all of its clients. Cordisco says the best source for information on the disease is at diabetes.org or 1-800-DIABETES.
